I heard someone once call grooming the process of moving dirt from your horse to you! If you haven’t seen it, feel free to check out the grooming video. So once you’ve gotten nice and dusty, and your horse is shiny clean, it’s time for the feet! It’s a very, very important part of grooming. Imagine having to walk around with a rock in your shoe all day?! Not very comfortable–so let’s make sure our horses don’t have to do this either. This video shows you how to properly and safely clean a horse’s hoof.
After you’ve done all the important stuff, you might want to put the finishing touches on. Here’s a video that walks you through brushing a horse’s mane and tail. Remember, though, that a horse’s tail hairs are very long and fragile, and you don’t want to brush them very often! Save tail brushing for special occasions like shows. Grooming is a very important part of getting a horse ready to ride, as well as putting him away for the day. Grooming accomplishes three important things:
1. It’s a great chance to look over your horse to see if he has any cuts, scrapes or swellings.
2. Grooming prevents the saddle, bridle or other tack from catching on something rough, like mud, on the horse’s skin and giving him a painful sore.
3. Grooming can make a horse’s coat healthier, as it “wakes up” the skin and encourages good blood flow.
